The Fallen Birds

The Fallen Birds

A mother bird has two little birds in both hands, meaning both wings she used to keep them safe and wait till they are ready to fly. Something happened to their nest when the strong wind blew and luckily she was able to save both birds before the wind threw them off the air.

As both of them grew, the first born bird on her right side started to complain to the mother.

"I want to fly like the other birds."

The first bird raised its desire.

"You aren't ready yet. It is not the right time. You wait."

The mother bird disagreed calmly.

The anxious bird did not like the mother's refusal.

"You don't trust me!"

The bird blurted its anger.

"Once you can open your wings wide enough and strong, you can fly."

The mother bird said with a sigh.

"Then put me down."

The insistent bird almost commanded the mother with its tone.

"I won't! Stop rebelling!"

The mother started to lose temper with the little bird.

"Down below is full of serpents and other dangerous animals that can eat the whole of you in an instance."

She gave the reason just to stop the questioning.

"I don't believe you! I am ready to fly!"

The furious bird started to prick with its little beak at the hand of the mother.

The mother tolerated the rebellion of her little one. Anyway, she reasoned, they were just little picks on her wing though they're creating holes.

Days passed by, the first bird was concentrating on its picking the hand of the mother more than anything else. The mother felt her wing as if a hand was bleeding. Most probably, it was her heart bleeding and passing it to the growing holes in her wing.

"I said stop it or I will have to let you fall!"

The bird continued until the holes became bigger and the mother's wing could not hold the bird anymore. Then it fell.

Once on the ground, the fallen bird realized it could not fly yet. It encountered animals on the ground and went hiding from them with its little attempted flies.

On the first realization of what just happened, it called out to the mother, not of regret but condemnation.

"You let me fall!"

It shouted to the mother bird.

The mother was looking at its broken wing. It looked like a bleeding hand to her. She could not believe the little bird's treatment of her.

Suddenly, she realized that the other bird on her left wing was getting heavy. It has been quietly accommodated on her other wing.

The second bird just kept itself quiet and obedient to the mother bird while discussions were happening between the other two birds. It saw what had happened to the first bird and blamed it on their mother. But at the same time, understanding the reason as it saw the broken wing of the mother, and the pain in her face.

"You are getting heavy and growing. Open your wings."

The mother said to the second bird.

The bird tried to open its wings but could not have total courage to fly. Its trials were low enough so it fell within the limits of the mother's wing.

It has been like that for a time for the three birds. The first bird struggling down below to survive and attempting to fly higher. While the second bird is still finding courage to fly and take risks. At the same time, the mother bird was getting older and weaker, the two little birds were getting older but stronger.

The mother's right wing started to heal, but the marks remain. The wounds left scars in her heart. Her left wing was getting weaker so she used the right hand to strengthen the left to prevent the second bird from falling as well.

Suddenly, the second bird saw the first bird flying beside them.

"Fly! Look at me! I can fly alone! Fly!"

The first bird was proud of its success announcing it within the hearing of the mother.

"I can't! It's mother's fault that I can't!"

The second bird retorted. Then the first bird agreed with the second and looked hastily at the mother.

"Yes! It was her fault that I fell. I had the worst happened to me down below, but look I was right! I can fly!"

The first bird continued talking then later left to explore the world. It came back once in a while trying to convince the second bird to fly. But to no result. It could  not gather enough courage to fly.

"You have to try. Fly or you'll go nowhere."

The mother bird kept telling the remaining bird.

"What now? Are you pushing me out?"

The bird replied irritatedly.

Then the mother bird suddenly fell. The other bird was big and heavy for her wings that she felt being old, tired and worn out.

"You let me fall! You let me fall!"

The bird shouted as it hit the ground with the mother. But seeing the predators below, its wings opened wide and could fly.

"I can fly! I can fly!"

It flew away happily and so excited it went away to discover the world. Since everything was new and there's an explorable space to travel, it did not even look back to where the mother bird had ended.

Days passed until one day, the two birds were reunited in a far away place. They hugged each other with bird hugs.

"How is mother?"

The first bird asked.

The second bird was startled with the question, reminiscing what had happened.

"I left her in..."

It could not be finished. Shaking, it flew fast heading to where he left the mother bird. The first bird just followed as fast as the other bird, wondering what happened.

Upon reaching the site where the mother bird fell, they could only see predators, but they saw a broken wing caught by the dying tree's branch.

"Mother!"

Both birds shouted. In grief or relief, the mother would never know. Anymore.
