The White Line

The White Line

He studies, works, and plays online. If he can only fill up his stomach from the food he sees online, virtually he would never let himself to leave whatever he was doing.

His life is inside the screen. He is actually not living the real life anymore.

He looked at the mirror again. He shaved and his face revealed the handsomeness of his face. He just smiled and left the bathroom.

He got himself changed, leaving his pajama of a boxer and shirt. He thanked and praised himself that, still, he could do this kind of thing. He knew others would not even bother themselves to do the same.

Then he went to sit in his favorite chair, his rocking chair. Though others consider the chair apt only for old people’s use. But he loves it.

He laid his head on the head rest and started to rock himself. As he still felt too tired even after a twelve hour sleep, he fell asleep and snored.

His deep sleep brought him into an unknown place inside his dream.

He saw himself facing a long, wide road like those he had been familiar with seeing inside his computers. His virtual world.

It was a nice blue road. He could not see where it ends, only that it has a line of white in the middle.

He started to walk.

As he walked on the white line, his head turned to look to his left then to the right. He could see many things as if he was walking on ground earth, but he’s not.

He was seeing life on earth as if they were movies. In all of them, there he is. His life without the existence of any technology items around him. As if in the old days.

“What are these trying to tell me?”

That was his big question.

Suddenly, his alarm clock struck six in the evening.

He remembered to have slept four in the early morning in his bed and woke up almost five in the afternoon. So he has slept an hour more in his rocking chair.

He took a deep sigh and after a while he went to get some food to eat in the kitchen of the small apartment he is renting.

He is single and living independently.

After filling up his stomach, it was almost eight  in the evening before he left the kitchen. He made sure that everything was clean and in order.

His other self took over then.

A big U-shaped table is waiting for him in the living room of his professional-type rented apartment.

He lives in a fifty square meter space consisting of a bedroom with its own toilet, small kitchen, a toilet and living/dining room that has a four chair dining table, sofa and his working table.

He seated himself on his ultra modern chair used by players online like him.

Before setting his fingers on the keys of his computers, he asked himself his everyday question:

“Now, where in the world do you want to be?”

Once again, he sighed, taking a deep breath as if he’s about to dive on a deepest ocean. Then, he left the real world to step into another, the virtual.

The speed in his actions and determinations made all his technological equipment and instruments hot and flared with smoke he did not even realize had enveloped him and made him disappear.

He perished.

Finally, the screen says, “Game Over.”
